The Beerman Family Thanksgiving Day Dinner
 |
Without a doubt, the Beerman Foundation is best known for is its coordination and sponsorship of the annual Beerman Family Thanksgiving Day Dinner. This event was started by Arthur Beerman in 1969, just a year before his death, due to his desire to provide an enjoyable holiday dinner for "the lonely, the needy and the hungry." He had been hospitalized that year following a heart attack, and had received hundreds of cards from well-wishing Daytonians. As a result, he wanted to do something to give back to the community. |
Today, the annual event has grown into a beloved local tradition that attracts an average of 4,000 guests; that number has occasionally swelled to 6,000 and even 8,500. A traditional Thanksgiving meal is served to every guest while live entertainment, clowns, and an appearance by Santa Claus keep the atmosphere festive. Believed to be the largest event of its kind in the nation, the Beerman Family Thanksgiving Day Dinner brings people together from all walks of life for fun, food and fellowship. The event is open to anyone who wants to attend. 2008 was the 40th Annual Beerman Family Thanksgiving Day Dinner.
| Enthusiasm and support run high for the annual dinner, as evidenced by the two-year waiting list of people wanting to help. More than 400 people volunteer their time each year to successfully carry out the event. Volunteers help decorate the hall, greet the guests, serve the meal and clean up afterward. It's truly a community event, and we can all be proud to be a part of it. |
